I'd rather work out a viewing deal than a distribution deal.(The math is harder). But the odd thing is it is the producers, not the TV company's, that own the pilots. They might be in for it because something that would have bombed in 2002 might be a smash hit in 2006. There would just have to be a way to share ad revenue, or perhaps put commercials in the TV shows.

Starting to think this might be an idea I take a step or two forward...

excellent idea. The problem will be negotiating with all the various owners of these pilots to air them. Steve Jobs has already cracked this nut with iTunes -- maybe offer them for sale on there?

That was the idea. I was reading an article that they request @200 pilot shows per major network. They spend about 2 million on each one and then only make 4-6 into real TV shows.

To me that is a HUGE waste of good original content. Besides one of them could get a cult following and turn out to be the next Seinfeld. Some people are already posting some pilot episodes to YouTube; here's a link to one called Heatvision and Jack. Staring a young Jack Black and Owen Wilson as the voice of the motorcycle.

How to monetize? Advertise! Just like real TV. And instead of simply using pilots that only aired once, or pilots from shows that never saw the light of day, how about selling this service to the networks to allow them to test new shows without airing them on TV?

Project Name: Pilot TV

Project Description: Pilot TV is a web site for the hundred of unaired pilots that never make it to TV. It is a place for people to comment and rate TV shows that only were shown once or never saw the light of day. Not sure how to monetize it other than having ads embedded in the clips.
