Yep. I agree about the technology, too. It's really much easier now than ever before to create applications that will work on both Mac and Windows and will work on all three major browsers -- Firefox, Safari, and IE.

However, I have yet to see true immersive applications -- the technology is still being used to augment (such as the voting system on NetFlix) the user experience.

I was referring to technology, not profits. Web 2.0 follows of the underpants gnomes business model. (step1: Steal underpants....Step 2: ??????? Step 3: PROFT $$$$$$)

Yep, that's basically it. Think of it as CafePress for music. I think that small bands and DJs that would like to have a free distribution network like this as well. I'd just have to work out something where they get a percentage of all CD sales or offer a discount if people order in bulk.

A podcast is "basically" free. I can recoup the bandwidth and storage costs with some advertising and write off a bunch of it as marketing.

I have yet to figure out why people think this Web 2.0 thing is hard.

So, I upload everything for my mix. You print and burn. Then, I specify the addresses of my various friends and it automatically mails it off to them. You use some free online functionality such as the podcast as the hook.

Cool idea.

ITunes has some of the functionality; mixing included (I think). It's more of the full package that I'm looking at; case, jacket cover, playlist and CD label.

That and the extra stuff to mix in.

It's not so much that they would be enabled with the service as much as they would have a CD playing that was made with the service. This is not a real time streaming solution; it's a web app.

Still I know some DJs who premake CDs for a club and then just have to mix in their requests.

Anyway good to know people get the reference. I made my wife a mix CD of great industrial/EBM songs after meeting her in a club and her not knowing the music playing. I guess there is magic in mix tapes.... and foot rubs.

You could have people pay money to make their own mixes, then, when they're at a bar or club (enabled with your service), they could pay more money to get their mixes into the rotation of music being played.

Dude! Where was this 20 years ago when I was in college? I made so many mixed tapes, I was the frigging foot massage master, er (sorry for the Pulp Fiction reference), the frigging mix tape master. Nothing better than buying a full album of music and finding you only needed 1 or 2 killer tunes. Because of me, I converted many losers from listening to crap such as REO Speedwagon, Styx, and Bon Jovi to immortals such as Mary's Danish, Fetchin' Bones, and Royal Crescent Mob. I'm sure you all have their albums.

In addition to music, you should have interesting audio clips that people could insert into their tapes/CDs/iPods. I used to gin up my tapes by dropping in 5 or 10 second Firesign Theatre clips (man, that puzzled people at parties) as well as the fake ads from The Who Sell Out, ("Heinz Baked Beans!"). If I would have had access to a library of interesting sounds and clips from movies, politicians, and other celebrities, I would have loaded up my tapes with dogs barking, Milton Friedman lecturing, Jimmy Stewart stuttering, crickets chirping, Ayn Rand coughing, John Wayne a-yellin' ("fill your hand, you sonofabitch!"), Johnny Thunders slurring, Richard Nixon denying, Billy Carter burping, and more. Man, that would have been a blast.

Project Name: Mix-Tape.com

Project Description: Mix-Tape.com is a vanity music creation service that allows people to create old fashioned Mix-tapes (actually CD's or podcasts) for special occasions or people. When you set up your account you are given an ID code and you can call in to say what you want to insert into the mix CD over the phone. You can then select songs and insert stock library clips or your custom call in clips. You have the option of wither making a Podcast for cheap or having a fully detailed custom CD with Jacket mailed to you.

The key is working with Apple to have access to songs on ITunes for the legal music library. Either that or allowing people to upload mp3s for a short period of time with the whole DRM disclaimer.
